The Cape Escape

Fifteen days of wine, mountains, penguins and long lunches — all from one salty little base in Kalk Bay, the fishing village Forbes called one of the coolest neighbourhoods on Earth.

The plan, in one breath

We land in late-summer Cape Town at the height of the wine harvest, drop our bags once, and never pack again. Kalk Bay puts the whole peninsula on our doorstep: penguins and Cape Point down the road, Table Mountain and the city forty minutes north, and three different wine valleys — Constantia, Stellenbosch and Franschhoek — each done as an easy day out. In between: two proper hikes, a sea-kayak with penguins, one of the world's great coastal drives, and a deliberately empty wildcard day, because the best trips leave room to change their mind.

Where each day takes us

Tap a day to see its route from our Kalk Bay base — numbered in the order we'll drive it, with the distance and driving time of every leg labelled on the line (tap a numbered stop for detail; day totals appear under the map). Times are realistic driving estimates, not straight-line ones — the lines are drawn point-to-point but the numbers follow the actual roads. "All days" shows the whole fortnight at once.
